In the high semi-desert plateaus of the north, iguanas and pit vipers live together with scorpions, rodents and coyotes while the birds of prey fly over in the sky. In the mountains of the Centre and the east, pumas and mouflons prefer not easily accessible heights, while the rain forest rustles with a great variety of birds, monkeys, reptiles and insects. Jaguars and quetzals, two mythical animals for the pre-Columbian civilizations, are not easy to spot. Around Ocampo, east of Morelia (Michoacan), it is possible to attend, in November, the annual show of the migration of millions of magnificent monarch butterflies which turn the trees bright orange.
