Orheuil Vechi

Orheuil Vechi or Old Orhei is an archaeological site situated close to the towns of Ohrei and of Trebujeni, about 30 miles from Chisinau. Tools from an ancient civilization were found there. Visitors can also walk to the ruins of a medieval village which consist of a mosque, two mausoleums, a caravanserai, hammams and a typically Moldovan house. As for the other sites, do not miss: an old fortress built by Stefan cel Mare in the 14th century then destroyed in the next century by the Tartars, and Butuceni's hermitage, a 13th century monastery. This geometrical construction, built by the monks, has rectangular windows, carved out of the stone, through which light can penetrate the darkness.
