Inaugurated by Albert I in order to put on display the sea wildlife he had brought back from its expeditions, the Oceanographic Museum and the aquarium are a must-see. Its impressive façade looks like an extension of the rocky promontory of the Old City which dives steeply into the sea. The aquarium presents some
4,500 fishes and 350 species from all five continents. Researchers have even managed to re-implant a coral reef imported from Djibouti. You will also see the scuba diving equipment of Captain Cousteau who was the curator of the museum for over 30 years. The lower levels are dedicated to the scientific research laboratories.
