In the Ovörkhangai, the ancient imperial site of Karakorum is located on the slopes of the Khangai mountains. Used in 1222 by Gengis Khan as a supply stopover for his army, it wasn't until his son's reign that it became the empire's capital city for about thirty years. Unfortunately, hardly anything of the original structure remains, except for some monumental statues and the palace's base.
