Where the Altai and the Khangai mountains meet, the Uvs province is incredibly varied. In the north, the largest sandy area of the country stretches over 1,500 mile², and its immense lakes lie by the side of out of reach summits. The basin around Lake Uvs is a summary of the country in itself: desert, steppe, taiga and glaciers follow one another over some sixty miles. Researchers have recently become interested in this absolute miracle of the environment.
