The Portuguese quarter A quiet town on the edge of the ocean, El Jadida's colonial past is still very present. Tim Durham / age fotostock
In 1502 the Portuguese built a small fort 47 miles south of Casablanca. Today, it is El-Jadida, a holiday resort protected by fortifications bordering a parapet walk. The view overlooks the ocean, and the city offers one of the most popular monuments in Morocco: the Portuguese cistern. Built in 1514, it still functions today. Its 25 pillars supporting stone vaults that reflect in the water give the area a certain magic that did not escape the attention of Orson Welles, for the film director shot several scenes of 'Othello' there.
