Country Guide

Our Editorial team's advice

Access to mosques and holy places is forbidden to non-Muslims. The Mausoleum of Mohammed V in Rabat and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail in Meknes are the two exceptions.
If you are sharing a family meal, wash your hands symbolically. With or without a fork, always use your right hand to eat. During the month of Ramadan, refrain from drinking, eating and smoking in public.
During this period of time, most public services, monuments and shops adjust their opening times. However, some restaurants and hotels especially, prepare meals for the non-Muslim.
Try and avoid too revealing clothing at any time of the year.
Ask people before taking a picture of them.
In the cities and on the roads, guides as well as "fake guides" assault tourists but, since recent government measures, the problem seems to be receding. Choose official guides registered by the Moroccan Ministry of Tourism. They know the history of their country and of the monuments perfectly. Don't hesitate to ask for information from the people working in the tourism industry and those working where you are staying.
