Souvenirs and handcraft Morocco: imperial cities

 Shopping

Strolling through a maze of alleyways, from stall to stand, small shop to workshop, in a generally noisy atmosphere: this is what the delightful souk is all about. Each city boasts its specialities. Fez, considered the capital of handicraft, is renowned for its blue pottery, copper dishes and leather ware. This is where the carpets woven by the Berber tribe of Aït-Benhaddou are sold. At the Marrakech souk, which has a great reputation for its fine leather ware, shoemakers stitch babouche slippers using the ways of their ancestors. The carpets pile up: Berber works lie on top of Marrakech fabric, better known as Chichaoua, with its stylized animals and red-based geometric pattern. Meknes prides itself on its woodcraft and Rabat on its embroidery and rugs made there since the 18th century. The art of haggling should be practised in good humour. It can lead to a friendly conversation over a cup of tea. But before discussing, it is best to take a walk around in order to familiarize yourself with the currently used prices. It is also possible to buy the same kind of objects from the handicraft co-operatives. They will be more expensive but it's a safer move as far as the quality of the products is concerned. Shops don't really have set opening times. They are generally open from 9am to 12pm and from 2.30pm to 6pm and are shut on Fridays or Saturdays and almost always on Sundays.
