Overview

The Coasts of Morocco

From Tangier, the gateway to Europe at Nouadhibou, near the Mauritanian border, the Moroccan coast stretches for more than 560 miles. The Atlantic Ocean and the sunny climate are ideal for a holiday by the seaside. The towns lying along the coast offer tourists a choice of ancient cities like Essaouira, formerly Mogador, and new seaside resorts unknown a few years back. Surfers and sailboarders will find the ultimate spot to excel, thanks to the ever-present wind that blows round the year. Full of contrasts, but always sunny, the road running along the Moroccan coast is a roller-coaster ride trip from the north to the Sahara Desert.

Safety and security: Morocco

Followig recent demonstrations in a number of cities across the country, The FCO (Foriegn & Commenwealth Office) currently advises travellers to take sensible precautions for their personal safety and avoid public gatherings and demonstrations.

There is a high threat from terrorism in Morocco. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.

Country Guide

Our Editorial team's advice

Access to mosques and holy places is forbidden to non-Muslims. However, the Mohammed V mausoleum at Rabat and Hassan II mosque at Casablanca are exceptions. When sharing a family meal, wash your hands symbolically. With or without a fork, eat with your right hand. During Ramadan, avoid drinking, eating and smoking in public. During this period, most government and public services, monuments and shops adjust their business hours. However, some restaurants and hotels, in particular, prepare meals for non-Muslims. Opt for less provocative attire at all times of the year. Request permission from people before taking snapshots of them. In the towns and along the roads, guides and "fake guides" assail tourists, but folllowing government action, this tendency has subsided. Go for guides officially authorised by the Moroccan Ministry of Tourism. They have a thorough knowledge of the history and monuments of the country. Do not hesitate to ask for information from the people working in the tourism industry or at your hotel. Take along one or more pullovers to protect yourself from the chilly coastal winds on winter evenings.
