Roaming from one stall to another, you will find shops and workshops in a maze of streets set in a generally bustling background: this is what the delightful souk is all about. Each town boasts its own specialty. Rabat is renowned for its embroideries and tapestry dating back to the 18th century. At Sale and Safi, you will find a selection of pottery. At Essaouira, artisans work on thuya which they decorate with pearls and silver. The shops of Casablanca offer an immense variety of carpets (like those at the Mediouna) and leather works. Bargaining is a common practice. Sometiemes it can even lead to a friendly conversation over a cup of tea. Before discussing, however, it is best to take a walk around in order to familiarize yourself with the stardard prices. You can also buy from the handicraft cooperatives that are more expensive, but guarantee product quality. Shops don't really have set opening times. They are generally open from 9 AM to 12 AM and 2:30 PM to 6 PM and close on Friday or Saturday, and almost always on Sunday. It is also possible to find products from other regions, such as copper trays and blue pottery from Fes, slippers from Marrakech, and spices from various regions.
