To reach the edges of the Sahara, you need to go to Er Rachidia, the departure point for the valley of the Ziz wadi. At around 12 and a half miles in the direction of Erfoud, stop off at the blue stream of Meski to freshen up. Erfoud is a former French garrison town at the entrance to Tafilalet: the biggest Moroccan palm grove with 130 villages (ksours) and a million date palms. For a millennium, it was the legendary city of Sijilmassa, the ancient passage for caravans. If you wake up at 3:00 am, you can watch the dunes of Merzouga in Erg Chebbi ( the largest in Morocco) at dawn. Some of the dunes are 490 ft tall, try to at least climb to the summit of the third hill. Be aware, though, that the windblown golden sand waves which stretch over 32 miles will leave you breathless.
