North of Meknes, Volubilis bears witness to the ancestral Middle Atlas. The roman ruins which stretch over several miles are Morocco's best preserved. Built between the 1st and the 2nd century, the triumphal arch, the basilica and the capitol are the most important monuments to see. This site contains very many mosaics, wonderfully spared by the vagaries of time, most of them showing figures of the roman mythology in action. Volubilis was classed UNESCO World Heritage in 1997.
