1975:Independence from the old Portuguese colony. Samora Machel becomes the country's first president. For 16 years, the country went through a civil war opposing the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO) already in power, to the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO), killing over one million people.
1986:: Samora Machel dies. Joaquim Chissano becomes president.
1990:: the New Constitution introduces a multi-party political system and ratifies free market economy.
October 1992:signing of the peace accords.
1994:first democratic elections. Chissano keeps his post as head of state.
1999:President Chissano and his party, the FRELIMO, win the legislative and presidential elections.
December 2004:Armando Guebuza is elected president.
