With its historically rich past, Inhambane is one of the oldest and quaintest cities in Mozambique. It used to be a stopover for the sailing ships of Arabic merchants (dhows), before becoming a large commercial harbour centred on ivory and the slave trade in the 18th century. Devastated in 1834, it was rebuilt and became one of the largest cities in the country. It declined in the 20th century, but you can still see many colonial houses there today. The old cathedral by the sea and the nearby mosque remain important sites of interest.
