Fresco painting, generally dedicated to the revolution, is a widespread art form in Mozambique which has evolved in three stages. The first stage (after independence was declared in 1975) was spontaneous and covered the country's walls and buildings with political slogans. The second stage was an expression of colourful and complex art devoid of text. The third stage was characterised by commissioned frescoes for significant sites, to commemorate the revolution.
