Zulu Winter

Zulu Winter

Hype is always difficult for a band to handle. For Zulu Winter, who follow in the footsteps of bands like Wild Beasts, Foals and Friendly Fires, the excitement might have been overstated. Somewhere between tribal pop and indie rock, Zulu Winter only formed in early 2011. When you realise how far they have come far in just over a year the widespread enthusiasm for this band based in London is maybe not so misguided. If you can accustom yourself to singer Will Daunt's somewhat high-pitched vocals, you may just end up appreciating their soothing yet cheery sound.

With the release of 'Language', the group's debut album, it is clear that Zulu Winter has promise. These days it is exceptionally difficult for an indie band to separate themselves from the crowd. With the plethora of groups knocking about, Zulu Winter will struggle not to fade into mediocrity.

However, 'Let's Move Back to Front' stands out from the rest, rhythmic and energetic, you will have it in your head for the rest of the day. 'Bitter Moon' and 'Small Pieces' are the perfect concoction, with a sad yet affirming quality. 'Silver Tongue' takes us to new heights and reminds us of Theme Park or even Talking Heads. The album comes to a mellow, calm ending with 'People That You Must Remember'.

All in all, the band members have done well for themselves, considering the short amount of time that has elapsed since they formed. Daunt sings: 'I keep you with the words, words I wield' and we are certainly captivated; Zulu Winter are ones to watch.
