Windhoek, Namibia Windhoek, situated in a desert region, is the capital of the Republic of Namibia Jurgen Von Wirth / age fotostock
The capital city, Windhoek, is located on the High Plateaus, at an altitude of 1,646 m, in about the geographical centre of the country. It stretches over valleys, between the Auas mountain ranges to the South-East and the Eros to the North-East. The city centre is quite small and you can go round it quite quickly. Start the tour of the city at Holfmeyer Walk, to get a good overview of the city. Then go back down onto Independence avenue, Windhoek's main street. As you are walking along, you will pass by Christuskirche church and the Tintenpalast, the Ink palace, now the presidential residence. In Windhoek, you will enjoy the German influenced architecture, a remaining aspect of the colonial era. But you will also discover an administrative city with its modern buildings. And in Katutura, the township, you will meditate on the condition of Black people under apartheid.
