A Buddhist monk, Nepal Although the majority of the population is of Hindu faith, Buddhism is also widespread, as evidenced by the many monasteries © Bruno Morandi
Located between India and China, Nepal was influenced both by the Hindu culture and the Tibetan Buddhist culture. After Tibet was invaded by the Chinese, Nepal welcomed many Tibetan refugees who keep their traditions alive within the Buddhist monasteries. A fascinating civilisation to be discovered in Bodnath and Swayambunath close to Kathmandu, in the village of Jawalakhel near Patan, but also in the Khumbu region where the most famous gompas are located (Tibetan monasteries) - Tyangboche and Pangboche.
