Curaçao and Aruba were discovered in 1499 by Alfonso de Ojeda, one of Christopher Columbus's naval officers. The islands inhabited by Arawaks came under Spanish domination.
From 1634 to 1636, the Dutch drove the Spanish away.
In 1863, Holland abolished slavery.
In 1951, the first West Indian government was created.
In 1954, the islands obtained their independence from the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
In 1986, Aruba acquired separate and autonomous status.
