Grande Terre - Bourail Bourail is a very rural town and is popular with those who really like to have a change of scenery when they're on holiday. Nevertheless, there are a few historic buildings here which are certainly worth a quick visit. © Matthieu Colin
Located 100 miles west of Nouméa, Bourail is Grande Terre's second largest city. It holds a few historic monuments, the city hall in particular, from the early 20th century, and the church, built in 1877. It is characterized by a wooden semi-circular ceiling inside as well as by fonts made out of the local stone. In Bourail, you can also visit the Folkloric and Historic Museum housed in an old building of the penitentiary administration. It displays a collection of Melanesian art (with pottery and petroglyphs), along with colonial rural life objects.
