Grande Terre - Flora In addition to the coral reef araucaria trees which have become symbolic of New Caledonia, the island is also home to a few native species which can be found in the various botanical gardens. ©Gil Giuglio
Grande Terre's flora has a range of approximately 3,000 species, some of which can only be seen in New Caledonia. You can see Cook pines, Montrouziera Caulifloras (the trunk serves as the central pile for the Kanak huts), gum-oaks, kaori trees, banyans and niaouli tea trees. If you want to discover these species, why not go to the two botanical reserves located in the heart of the island of Saille Forest and Ningua Peak.
