Grande Terre - The mountains The mountains of Grande Terre split the island into two distinct parts. © Sylvain Saustier
A mountain range runs across the centre of Grande Terre over 250 miles. In the north, Mount Panié towers at an altitude of 5,341 ft; in the south, Mount Humboldt is a close match at 5,308 ft high. On their eastern slope, the peaks drop dramatically into the lagoon whereas on their western slopes, hills and plains enable a more moderate transition.
