Grande Terre - Nouméa

Grande Terre - Nouméa

Grande Terre - Nouméa Grande Terre - Nouméa Nouméa is the perfect combination of beauty, historic interest and all kinds of leisure activities. The cathedral facing the marina is an absolute must for anyone visiting the city. © Matthieu Colin

Despite its size, Nouméa is an endearing city, which has a pleasant seafront and beaches only a few minutes walk away from the city centre. Do explore the heart of the city, starting from place des Cocotiers. A stone throw away from there, you can visit a stunning tropical garden sheltering tree fern, rare palm species, ficus and Australian beeches. A little further down, on rue Sebastopol, you will notice some colonial houses with finely carved verandas. Saint Joseph cathedral is also worth a visit. Built by the convicts at the end of the 20th century, in gothic style, it stands out with its two 82 ft high square towers. There is an impressive nickel leaf chandelier inside. Finish with the Village district; it is an area of shops and small restaurants where you can have a pleasant stroll.
