Nouméa: Jean-Marie-Tjibaou Cultural Centre The stylised 'Cases' associated with Jean Marie Tjibaou make this museum instantly recognisable. The museum itself is well worth a visit for those who are fans of Kanak and Oceanian art. © Ariel Fuchs
Jean-Marie-Tjibaou cultural centre, located on rue des Accords-de-Matignon, is a definite must-see if you want to familiarise yourself with Kanak culture. Created by the Italian architect Renzo Piano (who also designed the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris), it juxtaposes modern architecture and traditional habitat. The rooms are each dedicated to Kanak and Oceanic art exhibitions. Contemporary painting and sculpting in the Pacific Ocean are much represented. The Jean-Marie-Tjibaou Cultural Centre is also a venue for meetings and performances, with music, dance and theatre regularly displayed.
