Grande Terre - Marine life Fortunately, dangerous reptiles are more commonly found in aquariums here than roaming free. There are also a few sharks inhabiting the surrounding waters. © Matthieu Colin
The underwater wildlife is impressively rich. Over 2,000 fish species populate the coral reef. If you want to see them without taking the plunge, the ideal thing to do is to visit Noumea's Aquarium. It shelters myriad multicolour fish, but also scarier species, such as the blacktip reef sharks and the yellow-lipped sea kraits (venomous sea snakes). You will also be able to see turtles here.
