As for wildlife on ground, there are several protected species on Grande Terre. The kagu, New Caledonia's emblem, is a wading bird which runs instead of flying, and which sounds like it is barking instead of chirping. You may also see the notu or New Caledonian Imperial-pigeon, which is a large grey pigeon, and the rousettus, a type of bat. If you want to be sure to see them, go to Rivière Bleue Park, 40 miles east of Nouméa, or to Michel-Corbasson's zoological and forest park in Nouméa.
