Loyalty Islands - Wildlife Turtles laying eggs in the sand is a sight not to be missed, but at a certain distance so as not to disturb them. © Ariel Fuchs
The Loyalty Islands are the meeting place of humpback whales from June to September. If you want to see them from the islands, go along the cliffs as this is where the whales come closest to the coast. Ouvéa also shelters an endemic budgie species met only on this island. Maré has a natural aquarium as well, where fish and turtles seek refuge in case of a cyclone. This basin, carved out of the rock by the sea, is located in Tadine Bay. Even when there is no threat of a storm, go and see this absolutely superb site.
