The Loyalty Islands - Maré © Belal
On Maré, the most spectacular site is the Saut du Guerrier (Warrior's Leap). It is located on the coast, 4 miles east from La Roche and is a 22 ft wide and 98 ft high fault cutting the cliff into two. According to the legend, one of the island's warriors, pursued by enemies, assumedly crossed over the fault in one leap. As for his enemies, they failed the exploit and landed at the bottom of the cliff. From Tawainedre, a path leads to some very beautiful creeks. Ask for permission from the chief of the village to walk on that path; it is an hour's walk to the site.
