North Island's central part is rich in spas. The most famous ones are in Rotorua. You can treat yourself to a day wellness spa at Polynesian Pools complex, but you must not miss the spectacular hike in Waimangu thermal valley, 15 miles South-East from Rotorua. A hike of a little hour gives you the opportunity to come close to a "dawn of the world" kind of scenery, with its bubbling lakes and glowing craters. The same sight unfolds a little further away at Champagne Pool - this water expansion with crackled shorelines bubbles like champagne!
