On South Island, the South-West coast should be your priority. This is where you will find Fiordland national park. Go to Te Anau where the Milford Track starts : the hike takes 4 days, but your efforts will be largely rewarded by the sight of Milford Sound, one of South Island's most beautiful fjords which stretches over 10 miles. Then go up along the West coast, from Haast to Westport. This region has splendid viewpoints. Stop at Tauranga Bay, near Cape Foulwind : the beach is a good surfing spot, and you can go on a pleasant hike along the cape, to observe the seals which took up residence on the rocks down below.
