Wellington is to be explored starting from the harbour where you can take a pleasant walk along Jervoy quay. Then go on to Parliament Ground, where you will see the executive wing of the Parliament called the Beehive, because the building is an eleven storey tower. The architectural group is quite surprising. Go also on the cable car which goes from Lambton Quay. You will get to Kelburn Lookout within 5 minutes: the view of the bay is breathtaking. While you're there, visit the close-by botanical gardens. They cover 26 hectares and include a sumptuous rose garden (to be seen from November to April), as well as several rare species of New-Zealander trees.
