The illustrious Charles Dickens celebrates his 200th birthday today, 7 February 2012. There will be an amazing range of festivities across the world, from Australia to Zimbabwe, to London itself.
The Museum of London is now running its first major Dickens exhibition in the UK for over 40 years. The display is intended to portray the complex and intimate relation Dickens had with the English capital and will continue until June 2012.
Dickens' early life was spent at 1 Mile End Terrace, Portsmouth and his former abode now accommodates a museum dedicated to his life and works.
Crossing the globe, bicentenary celebrations will also take place in Argentina. As Dickens himself was an advocate of the acting profession, today the British Council, together with the Buenos Aires government, will host public performances and readings at the old orphanage in downtown Buenos Aires.
The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall will lead the global celebrations and will attend a special service at Westminster Abbey today. Among the other guests attending are the author's great-great-grandson, Mark Dickens, as well as actor Ralph Fiennes and biographer Claire Tomalin.
