If you can't get to Japan to partake in the tradition of enjoying the cherry blossoms, then consider heading to Brooklyn, New York, this spring where the Botanic Garden's celebration is already in full swing. Known as Hanami, the month-long festival will be held in various parts of the complex including the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, the Cherry Esplanade and in the Bonsai Museum.
The celebration culminates in the Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival on the weekend of 30th April and 1st May where a whole host of events have been lined up including typical Japanese performances, contemporary art exhibitions and workshops especially for kids. Entry prices for this closing festival are $15 for adults, $10 for teenagers and seniors while everybody else gets in for free!
This year the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is collecting for the victims of the earthquake in Japan through simple donations as well as by origami crane-making, so don't forget to show your solidarity.
