Gatwick Airport yesterday removed from service its 22 year old inter-terminal transit system in order to carry out upgrades. Two new shuttles will be in operation in May and July of 2010 and by August of the same year the service will be fully operational.
During the development programme, a replacement bus service will operate from the upper forecourt of both terminals every three minutes between 4am and 6pm and then every six minutes at all other times. According to a statement on the airport's website, passengers should allow an extra 20 minutes for their journey.
The old transit system has travelled two and a half million miles over its lifetime, which is the equivalent to 100 times around the globe or going to the moon and back five times!
