After opening in June 2009, the Mamilla Hotel in Jerusalem, the Israeli capital's first and only design hotel, has already been honoured by becoming one of 36 hotels to join the Design Hotels brand. The hotel, which is part of the small Alrov group which already owns the David Citadel Hotel in Jerusalem and will soon open two properties in Amsterdam and London, was designed by Piero Lissoni and Moshe Safdie, both renowned in their respective fields. The Italian designer has worked on, among others, the Teatro Nazionale in Milan and has designed stores for Benetton and kitchens for Boffi (as featured in The Mark hotel in New York). The Israeli architect has most recently completed work on Ben Gurion airport's Terminal 3 and was responsible for the revered Habitat 67 in Montreal.
Marrying the old and new, the property features Jerusalem stone throughout as well as cutting-edge design in the rooms as well as in the public spaces. Among the highlights of the hotel are the bathroom walls which turn opaque at the flick of a switch, the 12 tribes table at the front of the Dining Room featuring 12 different voguish seats and the Mirror Bar which is one of the trendiest places to have a drink in the city.
Commenting on the good news, Massimo Ianni, COO of Alrov Luxury Hotels said: "From the outset our goal was to bring to Jerusalem a truly modern, world-class hotel that will be adopted and enjoyed by a global, well-travelled audience. In Design Hotels? we have found a partner with many shared values and we are thrilled to be working together."
