Movenpick to open new hotel in Paris 01/02/2012

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts is to open its first hotel in Paris.

The hotelier will be taking over the Courtyard Paris Neuilly, currently a Marriott, which has been renovated into Mövenpick's usual Swiss style.

"[As a Frenchman] I always said I would not be satisfied as CEO and not have a hotel in Paris," said Jean-Gabriel Pérès. "We have a deliberate plan to not grow too fast, so we take care of each owner and property as a jewel".

Pérès now has his eye on a London hotel. He is keen on finding a property where Mövenpick used to have a hotel in the Victoria area.

The hotel group will also be opening hotels in Africa and Asia in the next year. With the aim to operate 100 hotels by 2015 (it currently has 69 in operation), the company has signed 11 new contracts with openings over the next three years.

This April a new Mövenpick will open in Sharm el Sheikh, as well as two hotels in Tunisia next year in Tozeur and Djerba. A 380-room hotel in Marrakesh is also under renovation to be opened in 2014.

Meanwhile in Asia, a 26-villa resort in Samoeng, Chiang Mai (Thailand) will open this year; Phoenix Island in Hainan Island, China will open next year and 2014 will see the opening of a Mövenpick property in Jimbaran, Bali. Management contracts have also been signed for hotels in Chifeng, Mongolia; Pantai Pandak Beach, Malaysia and Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh.

Pérès said he expects its portfolio to be an even split between business and leisure/city and resort hotels. This year the company will also open hotels in Laussane (Switzerland), Ankara (Turkey), Abu Soma (Red Sea), Giza, Aswan, three properties in Dubai and three in Thailand.
