After having to close due to severe flooding, Peru's main tourist attraction, the Machu Picchu, is reopening on April 1st!
Initially the railroad providing transport to the ancient Inca site had been washed away, resulting in thousands of tourists needing to be evacuated from the site. Efforts have been made to partially restore the majority of the rail service, allowing visitor's access once again to the most visited attraction in South America.
An official ceremony will mark the reopening of the site on March 28th and 2011 will mark 100 years since the island of Mach Picchu was discovered by American explorer and politician, Hiram Bingham.
The Machu Picchu site itself was un-damaged by the torrential flooding, however, visitors wishing to explore the Inca Trail are advised to check beforehand with Peruvian ground handlers as some areas are still unsafe.
