Taj Mahal replica for Dubai

Developers have announced plans to build a large scale replica of the Taj Mahal in Dubai, intended to house a hotel, shops and commercial buildings.

Dubbed the Taj Arabia complex, the BBC reported that developer Arun Mehra confirmed it would be completed by 2014 and would be far bigger than the original monument.

As well as the Taj Mahal, replicas of the Eiffel Tower, Egyptian pyramids and the Great Wall of China will also be included in the £621 million complex.

The hotel alone is to have 300 rooms, in a bid to attract soon-to-be-married couples to hold their weddings in the newly constructed monument.

The original Taj Mahal is more than 350 years old and was built by the emperor Shah Jahan in Agra, north India, as a shrine for his wife.

It has since been named a Unesco World Heritage site and attracts around 2.5 million tourists a year to its doors.
