Weather hampers Bulgaria travel

Weather hampers Bulgaria travel 27/01/2012

Severe weather conditions in Bulgaria have rendered certain roads impassable and there are problems at some of the country's major airports. Snow is expected to fall for a few days to come and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has urged people not to travel to the affected areas if at all possible.

A statement on the FCO website reads as follows: "Due to heavy snow in Bulgaria, some roads and mountain passes are closed. The border between Romania and Bulgaria is also closed. Many villages and towns in western and south-western Bulgaria are without electricity. There is disruption to flights at all main airports: Sofia, Varna, Burgas, Plovdiv. The weather conditions in Bulgaria are expected to continue until at least the end of the week. The Bulgarian authorities recommend avoiding any non-urgent travel."
