Oshun festival © D.R.
Oshun festival, in the town of Oshogbo, starts on the last Friday of August. It is a colourful celebration in honour of the deity of the River Oshun who, according to myth, protected the inhabitants from various scourges, several centuries ago. It is still now considered a protective guide. The ceremony includes the lighting of the sixteen lamps which burn all night, to the sound of drums and the rhythm of dancing and singing. The finale is an immense carnival all over the town and around the palace of Oba. Oshogbo is also known for its sacred forest, a spectacular sanctuary for Yoruba sculptures.
