Currency

The currency is the North Korean Won (KPW). Currency exchange transactions can only be performed at the Foreign Trade Bank, which is open every morning except on Sundays, or one of its agencies, which you will find in hotels and which open from 9.00am to 5.30pm. To withdraw money in a foreign bank you need a certificate of validity. Visa credit cards are accepted along with travellers cheques. You won't find any ATM machines here.

You are taken care of: an accompanied trip is unavoidable. A priori, the country has national and international airlines and railway lines. Numerous taxis are apparently available. As you cannot take an individual trip, it is not possible to hire a vehicle there.

Health

No particular vaccine is required. It is recommended to get protected against tetanus, poliomyelitis, hepatitises A and B (strong endemic area). The vaccine against typhoid fever is recommended as well as the one against Japanese encepalitis, justified for long stays in remote areas. No malaria.
Follow the hygiene and nutrition advice from the WHO (World Health Organisation): as soon as you touch food, wash your hands with Marseilles soap. Consume exclusively industrial beverages and have the cap taken off in front of you, and only drink treated water. Wash fruit and vegetables with treated water, cook them or boil them, peal them or forget them! Do not consume sea food, cold fish or dry meats, but rather meat and fish that are well cooked and served still hot.
