9th century: the Viking era begins.
995: Olav 1st is proclaimed king and attempts to christianise and unite the country.
From 1380 onwards: Norway is united to Denmark through marriage, then as part of the Kalmar Union.
1536: the Kingdom of Norway becomes a province of Denmark.
1814: Denmark gives up Norway to Sweden, but Norway sets up its own Constitution.
1905: the country frees itself from Swedish control.
1913: the right to vote is extended to women.
1935: the Labour party comes to power.
1939: Norway declares itself neutral.
1940: the Germans invade the country.
1945: Germany capitulates and King Haakon comes back to Norway.
1980s: the Labour party comes back to power with Gro Harlem Bruntland, one of the first female Prime Ministers in a Nordic country.
1994: 52.2% of Norwegians vote against their country's membership to the European Union.
1997: the Labour party wins the legislative elections but a centralist government of a three-party coalition is formed, with Kjell Magne Bondevik at its head.
March 2000: Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik resigns following a motion of confidence within Parliament, concerning the building of gas power plants.
