La côte nord de Bergen à Kirknes, Norway

Norway's coastline between Bergen and Kirkenes, on the Russian border, is incredibly rich and crammed with majestic fjords, cliffs and wild archipelagos. It attracts many tourists in summer, who come to see the midnight sun, admire the untouched wilderness and enjoy the pleasant temperatures. In winter, however, it attracts adventurous travellers seeking a unique holiday and who tend to come here for the Northern Lights, the freezing cold, and activities like snowmobiling, fishing on the frozen lakes and spotting the few animals that can withstand such harsh conditions. It won't be to everyone's liking but this part of Norway promises an extraordinary holiday experience with attractions that are as varied as they are surprising.

  • To see

The Lofoten Islands form a 75 mi long chain of islands displaying impressive snow-covered granite mountains.
Geirangerfjord, now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stretches inland for over 60 mi and boasts a series of towering cliffs and waterfalls, which are particularly impressive when the snow is melting.
Ålesund, a picturesque town with beautiful architectural style which straddles several islands connected by bridges and underwater tunnels.
Bergen, also dubbed the "Gateway to the Norwegian Fjords", is a former Hanseatic city and small trading port lined with tall wooden houses that bring a lot of charm to this little fishing port.
Trondheim, the former capital of Norway and home to a beautiful cathedral containing Romanesque and Gothic sculptures.
The Northern Cape, the last strip of land before the Arctic Ocean where a complex has been built, housing a projection room, a museum, a small chapel and a restaurant.

    To do

A cruise on one of the Coastal Express boats belonging to the Hurtigruten fleet.
Snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and dog sledding are a great way of exploring the vast snow-covered plains of the North.
    Fishing for giant crab.
An excursion to see the Maelstrom, the famous swirling current that was once said to lead straight down to an underground abyss.
If you're visiting in summer, hike around the islands and try your hand at kayaking in the fjords.

    To think about

Bring some warm clothing, regardless of the season.
Bring something to cover your eyes to help you catch some sleep in summer, when the sun never sets.
  • To avoid

Don't go out without a good pair of gloves, warm boots and a woolly hat. The wind-swept coastline can become bitterly cold and good thermal protection is absolutely essential. After all, it would be a shame to lose a toe or an ear to frostbite...!

    To try

Norway is generally associated with salmon and, more broadly, with seafood. If you like fish, you'll love the quality and freshness of all the products sold here, as well as the numerous ways there are of preparing them. Indeed, whether smoked, pickled, wood-baked, boiled or raw, seafood dishes are served for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Another local speciality are the red berries that are served with meat or as a dessert. The meat in question is generally reindeer, which is very tasty and goes perfectly with the sweet taste of the red berries.
In the northern part of the country, the speciality is giant crab, which is absolutely delicious!

    To bring back

Vacuum-packed smoked fish and all kinds of seafood sold in the supermarkets.
A reindeer hide to be hung on the wall or used as a rug for those long winter nights by the fire.
Various berry jams that go down nicely with meat dishes or for breakfast.
