Capital city of the north-west border province, Peshawar is the Pathans' city, they wear their voluminous green turbans, baggy trousers, and a cartridge belt on their shoulder. For many years the city was used as a rear base by the Afghan mujahideen, and a vast crossroads where all sorts of intrigues took place, and where charity representatives, politicians, arm dealers, journalists, army advisors and Pakistani and American secret agents would meet. Khyber bazaar is most certainly the most popular and lively district - shops and cafés stand alongside small hotels and peddlers. Within the old city, beyond the jewellers district, Shinwari Plaza is a centre where Afghanistan's most beautiful jewels, magnificent antiques and embroidery are sold at small stands. Peshawar is the starting point of excursions to Khyber Pass, one of the world's most famous passes, where the Persians and Alexander the Great's troops once came across.
