Bordered to the West by Costa Rica and to the East by Colombia, the Isthmus of Panama is a fine strip of land which, in its narrowest part, is no wider than 30 miles. The Pacific coast (1,000 miles long) is a wide green prairie lined with coconut trees and long white sandy beaches. The central part of the country alternates areas of rain forest and high mountain regions (the volcano of Baru towers at an altitude of 3,475 m). Finally, the Caribbean coast, which covers over 800 miles, is a region of fairly inhospitable mangrove area.
