Forests The forests This type of bridge, completely handcrafted, is common for crossing the valleys and rivers and a dense and still wild forest. © D.R.

Three quarters of the surface of the country are covered in old-growth or secondary-growth forest, which is very rich thanks to the geographical situation of New Guinea - a natural bridge between Asia, Australia and the south-western Pacific islands. Two thirds of the world's orchid species were listed there, over 700 groups of birds (among which the famous bird of paradise), 9,000 types of plants, over 300 mammal species, 250 types of frogs, 450 species of butterflies, 200 varieties of reptiles and over a hundred different types of snakes.
