Hiking Hiking in Papua New Guinea is possible provided you stay away from the mountains and the depth of the jungle... The most beautiful of vestiges have to be earned! © Patrick de Wilde
Out of the better known hiking trails in Papua New Guinea, let us mention a few examples: Kokoda Trail (7 days). A rather difficult trail across the mountains linking the North coast to the South coast, on a path made by the Japanese during the last war in order to launch a surprise attack on Port Moresby.Mount Wilhem (3-4 days). The highest mountain in the country (4,509 m); climbing it gives the opportunity to come across traditional villages and prodigious panoramas. From Mount Wilhem, you can also get to Madang within 3-4 days.Wau-Salamaua (3 days). Very hard, only if you are in excellent physical shape.Wedau-Alotau (3 days). Pleasant coastal walk, broken up by swims, visits to villages and jungle itineraries. Fairly easy.
