Asunción

Asunción

Asuncion, the capital city, gathers one quarter of the Paraguayan population and displays beautiful buildings from the end of the 19th century. Independence square is the heart of the city. The palace of the government - a (rough) copy of the palace of Versailles is a fair rival to Panteón nacional de los Heroes which is a copy of the Invalides in Paris. The squares of Asuncion are beautiful in July and August, beaming with the bright pink trees (lapachos), blooming everywhere. A walk through Carlos Antonio López park offers a beautiful view of the city from above. The Fine Arts museum displays a beautiful collection of Spanish paintings, among which you will find some of Tintoretto's and Murillo's works.
