Ciudad del Este was built at the same time as the hydroelectric dam in Itaïpu in 1958. It is often considered Latino America's largest supermarket because everything is tax free (Hi Fi, cosmetics, spirits, jewels, etc). Photo and video equipment is sold 50 % of its initial value. From there, you can go across the border to the Brazilian side of the Iguaçu waterfalls in less than an hour; presenting a second reason to stop by this town.
