Security
Small crime has been reported in the cities, in particular on public transport and on some markets in the capital city such as "mercado cuatro". Some areas should be avoided: the department of San Pedro, Juan Pedro Caballero in the north-eastern part of the country and Chaco. There are no dangers being with the numerous indigenous ethnic groups, except for the forest splinter of the Ayoreo ethnic group, located on the border with Bolivia. Paraguay is nonetheless a safe country but beware of police checks on the roads; a baksheesh will often be required from tourists. Avoid driving at night also.

An international driver's licence will be required by the rental agency. Be aware that in the region of Chaco, there aren't many petrol stations. From the capital city, it is possible to take a boat to Concepción on the Paraguay river: departures every Monday, allow 27 to 30 hours for the cruise.

Health
The east side of the country is listed in zone 1 regarding malaria. Recommended medicine: chloroquine.
Main recommendations:
Visitors must be vaccinated against tetanus and typhoid, yellow fever and hepatitises A and B. Due to large areas of marshy lands and to problems linked to dysentery, an antimalaria treatment is essential. Pack a good mosquito net, well sprayed with insecticide. Be very careful with food: avoid raw vegetables and red meat. Only drink water in bottles or purified with water purification tablets.
